The Pitt coaching staff continues to identify targets for their 2017 recruiting class.

Tonight we found out another recruit that Pat Narduzzi and his staff extended an offer to.

Matthew Butler (6-3, 250) is a 3-star defensive tackle/tight end  from Garner, North Carolina.  Tonight we talked to him after finding out that Pitt was his latest offer.

“The offer from Pitt surprised me a little bit”, said Butler. “Some guys from my area had received offers and they got a commitment from a Charlotte defensive lineman (Zack Gilbert) recently.”

I asked him about the offer surprising him.

“It was just out of the blue”, Butler told me. “Coach Canada offered me so I know why he offered.  He was my recruiter while at NC State. ”

“I know that Pitt is a good program  with a terrific defense. I also know that it’s a school with stellar academics.”

Including the offer from Pitt, Butler also holds offers from NC State, North Carolina, Duke, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, Penn State.  Butler tells me that Clemson, Vanderbilt, Georgia Tech and West Virginia are schools that are showing major interest.

Butler describes himself as an extremely strong and versatile player. He plays both defensive end and tight end for Garner High School.  Pitt is recruiting him on the defensive side of the ball.

“My hustle is unmatched and my technique has seen major improvement”,  Butler told me.

So with all these offers, where does he want to make visits to?

“I want to visit all of the above mentioned schools at least once including Pitt”, said Butler.  “Their academics are great and have a lot of opportunity in Pittsburgh.”

As you can imagine, it’s too early for Butler to have any early favorites.

“I can’t say I have a favorite right now due to the fact that I’ve only visited a few schools. But I know what I’d like to see in a school and when I see it, I won’t hesitate to publicize that.”
