Mullins Names His Top 3

Defensive tackle Derrius Mullins impressed a lot of people over the weekend.  Mullins (6-4, 326).  In his hometown of Columbus, Mullins was named the defensive line MVP at the Rivals Camp Series.

Mullins was clearly the best defensive lineman and opened the eyes of a lot of people. He has the build and skill set to be a big-time run-stuffer at a Power 5 school next season.

“It meant a lot to win the MVP award because it shows me that my hard work is paying off.”  Interestingly, Mullins told me that he was matched up a lot with Cass Tech (Detroit, Michigan) guard Jordan Reid, who today included Pitt in his Top 5.

Right now, Mullins offer list includes: Pitt,  Boston College, Cincinnati, Indiana, Kentucky, Purdue, Toledo, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

Mullins is also a guy that the Pitt coaching staff has plenty of interest in and it appears the interest is mutual.  This afternoon, I talked with Mullins and asked him if he currently has a “Top 3.”

“Right now my Top 3 is Purdue, Indiana and Pitt (no order)”, said Mullins.

Purdue- “Purdue because the coaches are really cool. I like the defensive line coach and Purdue is showing that they really want me.”

Indiana- “Indiana because I had a great time on my visit there.   What stood out to me is the head coach brought me to the coaches lounges so that him and I could talk and he could get to know me better aside from just football .

Pitt- “Pitt is in the Top 3 because the coaches are cool. Of all the head coaches that I’ve talked with, Coach Narduzzi is my favorite. I also think it’s really cool that they share facilities with the Steelers.”

Since his visit to Pitt for Junior Day, I asked Mullins how often the Pitt coaching staff has been in touch with him and who on the staff is recruiting him?

“Yes, Pitt has been staying in contact with me, it’s usually either Coach Narduzzi or Coach Peterson. I feel like they really want me”, said Mullins.

Obviously, Pitt isn’t the only school showing interest in this talented defensive lineman.  Mullins plans on visiting Michigan State and Purdue this weekend.  In a couple weeks, he’s going to see Penn State and Indiana and later in the summer, Pitt and West Virginia.

“I’m going to commit sometime during my senior year”, said Mullins.  “My mom wants me to make all my officials before I make a decision.”
