Tuesday Pitt/WPIAL Recruiting Notes

Pitt Script Helmet

Before we get into today’s recruiting notes, I wanted to remind everyone that if you’re not already doing so to give the Pittsburgh Sports Now Facebook page a like and follow us. Thanks

UPDATE (6:27 AM)

**While the Pitt football team is isn’t permitted to host any recruits until July 11 because of college football’s “dead period,” Kevin Stallings and his staff have no such restrictions. Today the Panthers program will host a towering prospect from Florida.

Victor Uyaelunmo (7-0, 225) will arrive in Pitttsburgh from Miami and will tour the Pitt campus. Uyaelunmo was one of the first players that Stallings offered after taking over as Pitt’s head coach.

Uyaelunmo also holds offers from Georgetown, Miami, USC and Tennessee.

We’ll definitely reach out to Uyaelunmo after his visit for his reaction.

UPDATE (2:29 PM)-

**Some thoughts on Pitt’s latest commitment Albert Tucker and the future impact.

**One of the biggest impacts of this signing is where Pat Narduzzi recruited Tucker from. It would be hard to name a school in Florida that produces more than St. Thomas Aquinas. Since becoming head coach, Narduzzi has placed an emphasis on recruiting in Florida and it’s starting to pay dividends.

**The athletic ability of Tucker. Anyone who’s watched Pitt over the last 6-7 years could see that one of the biggest weaknesses on defense was speed at the linebacker position. With players like Tucker, Cam Bright, Saleem Brightwell, Anthony McKee, Kaezon Pugh, Chase Pine and Elijah Zeise, that problem is quickly turning into a strength.

UPDATE (2:48 PM)-

**So, what’s going on with Pitt and 4-star recruit Jarell White? Why hasn’t Pitt offered him a scholarship yet?

Here’s my take on the situation. I think it simply comes down to where does White fit in on Pitt’s defense? If they planned on using him at linebacker, they just got a commitment from a kid that would possibly play the same position. Tucker is now the 3rd linebacker that Pitt has taken in this recruiting class. The Pitt coaches have to determine if White has the coverage skills necessary to play defensive back. Stay tuned.

UPDATE (3:05 PM)-

**4-star wide receiver Jaylen Harris tells Josh Helmholdt that he’ll be visiting Pitt once the dead period is over. Harris (Cleveland, Ohio) also plans on visiting Michigan State, Alabama, Penn State, Tennessee, West Virginia and Ohio State.

UPDATE (4:35 PM)-

**4-star DE TyJuan Garbutt is a player that the Pitt coaches have always had their eyes on. In fact, Pat Narduzzi and Rob Harley were the first school to offer Garbutt a scholarship last year. Garbutt eventually gave a verbal commitment to Virginia Tech but I’ve learned some interesting information.

From what I understand, the Pitt coaches are still actively recruiting Garbutt, who participated in Pitt ‘s 7×7 camp over the weekend. Keep in mind, Garbutt has publicly expressed how much he liked the Pitt coaches, especially Narduzzi and Harley. I’m also told by a source that Garbutt will visit Pitt for the Pitt/Penn state game.  Stay tuned.

UPDATE (5:39 PM)-

**Following his visit to Pitt today, I caught up with 7-0 center Victor Uyaelunmo and asked him about his day.

“It was good, I got to see the whole school and got a feel for what it’s like,” said Uyaelunmo. “My visit consisted of a tour around the school, I got to meet the academic department and the counselor, and also got to also meet the whole team and watch the team practice.”

“I had a good interaction with the coaches and Coach Stallings. I got to talk to him personally and see what his plans were for me coming into Pitt. I already got a feel for the school campus(only thing it’s a different weather in the winter????) but it was good overall.”

UPDATE (5:53 PM)-

For the skeptics out there wondering if the Pitt football program is trending upward and would they have trouble transitioning to the ACC. Take a look and let me know.

Interesting side note: PSU is 4-6 in their last 10 conference games and 3 of their 4 wins were versus teams with interim head coaches, the other was against an Indiana team without their starting QB. All of their opponents had losing records.

UPDATE (8:03 PM)-

**University Prep star athlete Kenny Robinson announced that he’ll release his Top 5 this week. Robinson (6-3, 203) has offers from Pitt, Cincinnati, Iowa State, Louisville, Temple, Toledo and West Virginia.
