Now that the long holiday weekend is over with, people will be returning to work and normal schedules will resume. That means coaches will be returning from vacation and recruiting news will pick up.
** Aliquippa 2018 safety Kwantel Raines received good news a few days ago when he was named one of the top 150 players in the country for the Class of 2018 and was designated a 4-star recruit by Scout.com. When the recruiting dead period is over with next week, I’m told that Raines could be taking a trip to visit both Michigan and Michigan State. When it’s all said and done (in my opinion), Raines will turn out to be just as big a national recruit as Clairton’s Lamont Wade.
** Another tight end that Pitt had been recruiting has committed to another school. John Kirven (Woodberry Forest, Virginia) has given a verbal commitment to Virginia. This is actually a re-commitment to Virginia for Kirven, who originally gave a verbal to the Cavaliers in October before opening up his recruitment after head coach Mike London was fired.
** Pitt fans, I’ll give you a name to remember and that’s TE Kurt Rafdal from Carmel, Indiana. Rafdal (6-7, 230) is a Rivals 3-star player with offers from Boston College, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa State, Louisville, Maryland, Nebraska, Purdue and Syracuse.
Take a minute to look at his highlights, he reminds me a lot of former Pitt wide receiver Mike Shanahan. He’s used a lot in the slot and because of his size, is an extremely tough matchup. Right now, Rafdal has offers from Pitt, Boston College, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa State, Louisville, Maryland, Nebraska, Purdue and Syracuse. I think he’d be a great get if the Panthers could land him.
** Most people assumed that when 4-star athlete Jarell White (Cincinnati, Ohio) visited Pitt a couple of weeks ago, that an offer would immediately follow. Those people would be wrong because I’m told that as of tonight, White hasn’t received an offer from Pitt. I believe the issue is where to play him. I’m not sure the Pitt coaches are convinced that he can play secondary in their defense scheme.
** A couple of players that Pitt is recruiting tell me that they’re done taking visits this summer. Both DT Derrius Mullins (Columbus, Ohio) and TE Jake Paulson (Louisville, Kentucky) tell me that they want to put all their concentration into their upcoming high school football season.
** Florida DE Noah Curtis (West Palm Beach, Florida) tells me that he plans on visiting Pitt later this month. Curtis (6-5, 220) has an impressive offer list of Pitt, West Virginia, Central Florida, NC State, North Carolina, Minnesota, Maryland, Kentucky, Iowa State and Arkansas.
