Sunday Pitt Recruiting Notes

Thankfully, today is the last day of the “Dead Period” for college football recruiting, which means coaches can visit prospective recruits. All that means is there’s a greater chance for recruiting news.

** This morning I’m working the phones trying to find out if they’ll be any activity on the South Side. Starting today and for the next couple  of days, I’ll update this notebook as I learn of visitors. It’s an interesting time for visits because recruits only have a few weeks before high school practices start, so most will want to make their last visits of the summer before the season begins.

** I talked with Philadelphia 2017 cornerback Kenneth Bennett and he could be making a decision sooner rather than later. Bennett recently visited Pittsburgh and received an offer after working out for the Pitt coaches. I get the sense that Bennett likes Pitt and could make an early decision because he doesn’t want to lose out on the scholarship. I’m sure the coaches have informed him about how many cornerbacks they’ll be taking and how his spot could be gone if a couple other kids commit. Keep an eye on Bennett.

UPDATE (11:43 AM)-
**It’s decision day for former Gateway and current IMG Academy OT Robert Hainsey. The blue-chip lineman will be making his decision tonight at 9 PM on ESPNU. Like a few other Western PA recruits, I expect Hainsey to give a commitment to Notre Dame.

UPDATE (1:41 PM)-
**The Pitt basketball coaches have been out the past 3-4 days evaluating talent all over the East coast.  Today, Kevin Stallings decided to offer a scholarship to one of those players.

Darryll Morsell was the recipient of that offer from Pitt. Morsell is a 6-3 shooting guard from Baltimore, Maryland. Yesterday, Morsell received an offer from Maryland and today Pitt.  Other schools that have offered include Dayton, Temple and USC.

UPDATE (3:24 PM)-
**Right after he picked up the offer from Pitt, I spoke briefly with Darryll Morsell, who had to go back on the court for another game.

“I was kind of expecting the offer from Pitt because they’ve been recruiting me pretty hard recently but I was excited”, said Morsell. “Coach Sutton offered me and told me he thought Pitt would be a great fit for me.”

Yesterday, Morsell was offered by Maryland and today Pitt and then by Virginia Tech. I asked him what’s he doing that has caught the attention of coaches.

“I think I’m showing the coaches that most importantly I’m a winner. I make winning plays and I’m very versatile.”

Morsell was supposed to visit Pitt a couple weeks ago but that got postponed because Coach Kevin Stallings had to leave town. Now that he received an offer the visit has gotten re-scheduled for sometime in August.

UPDATE (6:00 PM)-
**Here’s an update on former Pitt commitment cornerback Exree Loe.  According to Rob Cassidy from Rivals.com, Loe currently has West Virginia, Maryland, Boston College and Rutgers in his Top Four, that could change if he’s offered by Tennessee and Kentucky. According to Cassidy, Loe will make a visit to West Virginia on July 23rd.

UPDATE (9:04 PM)-
**Tonight, Tampa 3-star running back Malik Davis released his “Final 7” and it included Pitt. Davis (5-11, 187) listed Pitt, North Carolina, Kentucky, Indiana, Miami (FL), Maryland and Illinois as his finalists. He also had offers from Arizona, Iowa State, Missouri, Purdue, Virginia Tech and West Virginia. I’m scheduled to talk with Davis a bit later tonight for his reason for including Pitt.

UPDATE (9:27 PM)-
**Just minutes ago, former Gateway and current IMG Academy OT Robert Hainsey gave a verbal commitment to Notre Dame.  Hainsey joins Pine-Richland QB Phil Jurkovec, Central Catholic LB David Adams and Central Catholic DT Kurt Hinish as Western PA products that go to Notre Dame.
