The Duquesne basketball staff has been out recruiting the East coast looking for talent to add to the Dukes roster and today they were rewarded for their efforts.

While on an official visit to Duquesne, Florida 2017 point guard Jamari Wheeler gave Jim Ferry his first verbal commitment in the Class of 2017. Wheeler, (6-1, 160) who’s a native of Florida, is rated as a 3-star prospect.

Following his commitment to Duquesne, I talked to Wheeler about his decision to make select the Dukes while on his visit.

“I decided because I felt like it’s the place that would be the closest feeling to my second home,” said Wheeler.

While admitting to me that he was a bit surprised he made such a quick decision, Wheeler knew this was the right place for him to spend his next four years.

“It’s how the coaches care about you as a player and as a person. I also love how everything is like a family environment there,” said Wheeler. “The visit was so nice, I love Duquesne’s campus and the city of Pittsburgh, it was so beautiful.”

So what kind of player will Dukes fans be watching for the next four years?

“I’m a player that loves to get to the rim, I love to play defense and I feed off the fans energy.”
