How Will Pitt Fill Remaining Scholarships?

Published

on

It’s mostly quiet on the college football recruiting scene because we’re still in the dead period. Coaches aren’t permitted to start visiting recruits again until January 12th.

Pat Narduzzi and Pitt currently sit with 19 verbal commitments, the latest being Florida cornerback Damarri Mathis. The question Pitt fans want to know is who will be next?

Although this isn’t official, I’d guess that Pitt has 5 or 6 more scholarships to use in this Class of 2017.

Let’s take a look at possible candidates to fill those remaining spots.

Quarterbacks:  No one

Running Backs: A.J. Davis, 4-star running back from Lakeland, Florida; As far as I know, Davis is the only running back that Pitt is currently recruiting.  Davis made an official visit to Pitt in December but sounds like he has a couple teams ahead of Pitt.

Wide Receiver: D.J. Edwards was someone that Pitt was recruiting but over Christmas he gave a verbal to Purdue. Michael Smith (Vero Beach, Florida) is someone that Pitt was high on and he visited Pitt in December but since then Notre Dame offered him and look to be the front-runner. Pitt still has a chance but Notre Dame is going to be tough to beat. Florida’s Antoine Thompson is another possibility but last I spoke with him an official visit hadn’t been scheduled yet.

Tight Ends: No one

Offensive Lineman: Ohio offensive tackle Thayer Munford is someone that Pitt has recruited for awhile but I’d guess that door closed when Pitt got a commitment from Florida tackle Jerry Drake.

Defensive Tackles: It’s no secret that most people expect Washington DC’s Jaylen Twyman to eventually give a commitment to Pitt. Twyman made his official visit to Pitt back on December 9th.

Defensive End: Kevince Brown (Winter Park, Florida), Chrishawn Wilson (Florence, South Carolina), Noah Curtis (West Palm Beach, Florida), Stephon Zayas (Ft. Lauderdale, Florida), Guy Thomas (Miami, Florida), TyJuan Garbutt (Fredericksburg , Virginia), Zion DeBose (Spencer, North Carolina), Zach Morton (Detroit, Michigan) are all possibilities with Garbutt being the big name in that group.

Linebackers: Nathan Proctor made a verbal commitment to Virginia Tech over the weekend but he still plans on making an official visit to Pitt on January 13.

Cornerbacks: Harrison Hand, Endrickson Boucher, Anthony Johnson, Jason Pinnock and Jeffrey Lubin are all possibilities. I liked Pitt’s chances with Pinnock but Notre Dame is likely to offer him this week. Will that change Pinnock’s mind? Johnson and Boucher are two others to watch.

Once the dead period is over with, Pitt will have 2 straight weekends of official visits.
