Duquesne search took a lot longer than fans wanted but in the end they got their man.
Sources tell Pittsburgh Sports Now that Duquesne will hire Akron’s Keith Dambrot as their next men’s basketball coach.
Duquesne basketball on Pittsburgh Sports Now is sponsored by The Summit Academy: setting young men on the path to a better future.
After firing Jim Ferry two weeks ago, Duquesne administration approached Dambrot but he wasn’t interested. However, in the last couple days athletic director Dave Harper re- approached Dambrot who had a change of mind.
As we reported yesterday afternoon the two sides met here in Pittsburgh and a lot of progress was made. Our sources say that Dambrot is expected to receive a 7 year contract in the neighborhood of 7 million dollars.
The 58-year old coach has been at Akron since 2004 where he’s compiled a record of 305-138 and has had 13 straight 20-win seasons for the Zips.
This is a huge move for the Dukes who’ve not made the NCAA tournament since 1976 and have had only one 20-win season since 1980.
This will be a special move for Dambrot who’s father played and starred at Duquesne in the early 50’s.
