With all the new faces on his roster this year, Andy Toole will be counting on Matty McConnell to lead the young Colonials.

One game into the season and everything is going as planned.

Last night in the team’s exhibition opener at Niagara, the junior guard led Robert Morris to an impressive 73-70 victory.

McConnell led all scorers with 27 points, including 4-for-8 from three point range. Two freshman had nice debuts for Toole’s team as Jon Williams added 17 points and 7 assists while Koby Thomas chipped in 9 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

Speaking of freshman, Toole had three of them in his starting lineup with true freshman Williams, Charles Bain and redshirt freshman David Cole. Three other new faces in his rotation were junior college transfers Taevon Ashmeade and Malik Petteway and grad transfer Ronnie Gombe.

Back to McConnell, along with his 27 points, he also collected 5 rebounds, 5 steals, was 9-of-10 from the free throw line and played 37 minutes.

Next up for Robert Morris is one more exhibition game on Monday night at Saint Vincent. Tip-off is set for 7 PM.
