Robby Carmody officially signed his National Letter of Intent Wednesday morning to play college basketball at Notre Dame.

The 6-foot-4 Mars Area guard signed at 7:15 a.m. when high school seniors are first allowed to fax in their letters. A four-star recruit, Carmody ranks in the top 100 players among the major recruiting services individual rankings—Rivals, ESPN, 247Sports—and is widely considered the top senior in the WPIAL. He verbally committed to the Irish in late June.

“It was special,” Carmody said of officially signing. “It was something I’ve been waiting to do my entire life and to finally have that dream come true—it’s just been a really special day.”

Carmody is part of a talented four-man class for Notre Dame head coach Mike Brey. Among the national recruiting services rankings, the Irish’s 2018 haul ranks seventh according to 247Sports and 11th by Rivals.

Carmody said he was in frequent contact with the Notre Dame coaching staff Wednesday, including his new future coach.

“He kept it short, saying how happy he was that me and the other recruits were able to make it official,” Carmody said of Brey. “I can’t wait for all of us to be on campus next summer.”

Carmody, who plays for his father Rob, chose Notre Dame over Purdue, Michigan, Indiana, and Maryland.

“It’s the best opportunity for life,” Carmody said of choosing the Irish. “Obviously, they have a pretty good track record of bringing in players similar to me and developing them and giving them a chance to play professionally, whether it be in the NBA or overseas.”

He added the education is world-renowned and, “having a degree from there can put you places.”

As a junior, Carmody averaged 26 points and 12 rebounds, and he is already the all-time leading scorer in Mars Area history with 1,456 points. He was named a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Fabulous 5 selection and first-team all-state selection last year.

The younger Carmody is looking forward to his final season at Mars and, “getting to play with my friends one last time.”

With his signing, Notre Dame has secured commitments from the top WPIAL basketball player in the class of 2018 and the top WPIAL football player in the class of 2018—Pine Richland quarterback Phil Jurkovec. Carmody said the two have been friends since third grade and played AAU basketball together growing up.
