Duquesne Loses Finale to UMass, 85-75

Keith Dambrot’s first regular season as Duquesne head coach came to close with a disappointing 85-75 loss to Massachusetts.

Duquesne’s Mike Lewis hit a 3-pointer with 2:50 remaining to cut the lead to 72-70 and then UMass followed with a 13-5 run to close the game.

Lewis and Tarin Smith led Duquesne in scoring with 17 points, while Rene Castro-Caneddy had 12 points and 5 assists. Freshmen Eric Williams had 11 rebounds while Tydus Verhoeven had 4 points and 4 blocked shots.

For the game, the Dukes shot the ball really well going 58.2% from the field and 56.3% (9-16) from 3-point range.

Next up for Duquesne is a trip to Washington DC for the A-10 tournament. They will be seeded #10 and will face #7 seed Richmond on Thursday with a tip-off at 6 PM. The winner will face #2 St. Bonaventure in the quarterfinals on Friday.

NOTES:
**Duquesne finished with 7 conference wins this season, their most since 2011-12.

**With another double-digit rebounding effort, Eric Williams tied Bruce Atkin’s (1978-79) Duquesne freshman record of 14 double-digit rebounding games.

**With four 3-pointers, Mike Lewis (86) is within three of moving past Tony Petrarca (1990) and Micah Mason (2015) for fourth on the schools list for 3-pointers made in a season. Mason holds the school record with 118 made in 2016.
