Big 2018 WPIAL News: Pine-Richland to Open Season vs. IMG Academy

Pine-Richland football coach Eric Kasperowicz is keeping his recent tradition of opening the season against a national power.

Last season, the Rams opened up against Wayne High School from Huber Heights (OH) and blanked them by the score of 41-0.

This coming opener, he increased the competition level big-time as today it was reported today that the defending PA state champions will open their 2018 schedule against IMG Academy (Bradenton, Florida), one of the most talented programs in the entire country. Neither school has confirmed this report, however, we’re told this game will happen.

Considering the amount of talent Pine-Richland graduated, led by quarterback Phil Jurkovec, they’ll be decided underdogs but this game is about competition and exposure for the Pine-Richland program and WPIAL football in general.

Although the scoreboard probably won’t show it, this game will benefit the Pine-Richland players.

Somebody else that this game will benefit will be the Pitt football coaching staff.

The reason for that is from a recruiting aspect. The Pitt coaching staff is recruiting a number of players on the IMG Academy roster and has tried really hard the last couple of years to land commitments from that program. Currently, 2019 wide receiver Cameron Phillips (3-star recruit) and 2019 offensive tackle Charles Turner (3-star recruit) hold offers from Pitt.

I’m sure that Charlie Partridge, Rob Harley, Tim Salem and company are looking at other players on their roster as well.

Of course, Pitt is also interested in a certain player on the Pine-Richland roster: left tackle Andrew Kristofic.
