A week ago, the Pitt guard position was in quite a bit of uncertainty but that’s now changed with two commitments.

First, Jeff Capel landed a commitment from 4-star guard Trey McGowens and today he landed another guard from Virginia.

2018 point guard Xavier Johnson (Arlington, Virginia) announced tonight on Twitter that he’s made a verbal commitment to Pitt.

Johnson is rated as a 3-star recruit by 247 Sports and one of the Top 20 combo guards in the country.

Along with Pitt, Johnson also had offers from Nebraska, Creighton, Georgetown, Georgia Tech, UMass, NC State, Providence and Washington.

While McGowens is someone that can play multiple position, Johnson is viewed as a pure point guard because of his ability to run an offense, get his teammates involved and his quickness to get to the paint.

This is Capel’s second commitment and both have come from the state of Virginia.

The addition of Johnson gives Pitt eight players officially on the roster, pending the decisions of Malik Ellison and Kene Chukwuku, which means Capel currently has three scholarships to fill–with a chance of that number growing to five.
