Insider Access: Pitt Basketball’s Jeff and Jason Capel

PITTSBURGH — This Sunday is father’s day, and for new University of Pittsburgh head coach Jeff Capel III and his brother and assistant coach Jason Capel, this will be the first year they’ll celebrate without their father, Jeff Capel II.

The elder Capel was a basketball coach at the high school, collegiate and professional levels while his sons were growing up in North Carolina, and though the brothers are different, growing up the son of a basketball coach has helped shape them both.

After his father was diagnosed with ALS in 2016, Jeff, then an assistant coach at Duke, wrote extensively in The Player’s Tribune about what his father meant to him.

I sat down with Jeff and Jason about their father, their relationship, and the winding road that has brought them both to Pittsburgh this Father’s Day.
