Pitt to Wear “AO” Decals to Support Alex Officer’s Cancer Fight

PITTSBURGH — Pitt will wear helmet decals against Duke this week with the initials AO on them, as the Panthers continue to support their former teammate Alex Officer, who is battling bone cancer.

“It’ll be a special sticker so we can honor him so we can keep him in our thoughts as we’re out on the field,” Pitt head coach Pat Narduzzi said Thursday. “We’ll be thinking about A.O.”

Officer, who graduated from Pitt this spring, is just about ready to finish up his first round of chemotherapy. Officer has osteosarcoma and will also likely need to have surgery in addition to his chemotherapy.

A center and guard, Officer played for Pitt from 2013-17 and started 46 consecutive games to finish his career. After graduating, he had been part of the offseason rosters of the Oakland Raiders and Kansas City Chiefs before learning of his diagnosis.
