PITTSBURGH — No. 1 Aliquippa defeated No. 2 Derry 42-19 in the WPIAL Class 3A Championship Saturday at Heinz Field.

It was the 29th trip to the championships for Aliquippa, their 11th in a row and the win marks their 17th WPIAL Title.

Derry – who was making their first appearance in the title game – fumbled on their second play from scrimmage, and three plays later Eli Kosanovich hooked up with Will Gipson for a 15-yard touchdown.

Derry committed three turnovers in their first five possessions (a lost fumble and two interceptions) and turned the ball over six times in the loss.

Xavier Henry and Avante McKenzie each scored rushing touchdowns as Kosanovich threw four touchdown passes – three to Gipson and one to MJ Devonshire for 56 yards.

The duo also got it done on the defensive side as Devonshire hauled in three interceptions to go along with Gipson’s in the second half.

Gipson finished with seven receptions for 165 yards and three touchdowns while Kosanovich paced the offense going 18-33 for 327 yards and four touchdowns.

Aliquippa outgained Derry 399-200 while holding the Derry offense to just 46 yards passing.
