Pitt freshman guard Trey McGowens has been named the ACC Rookie of the Week for the second time this season.
McGowens, a 6-foot-2 guard from Pendleton, South Carolina, set Pitt’s freshman scoring record in the Panthers’ 89-86 overtime win over Louisville on Wednesday, scoring 33 points, which exceeded Clyde Vaughan’s record from 1980 by four points.
He then added seven points, seven assists and five rebounds in Pitt’s loss to No. 15 NC State on Saturday.
McGowens was also named ACC Rookie of the Week on Dec., 2018. He is one of three players, along with Duke’s RJ Barrett and Zion Williamson, to win the award twice so far this season.
On the season, McGowens is averaging 13.4 points, 3.6 rebounds, 2.3 steals and 2.0 assists per game. He’s shooting 46 percent from the floor and 34.9 percent from 3-point range.
The Panthers return to the hardwood on Monday night, when they host No. 11 Florida State. Tip off is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on ESPNU.
