While the perception might be that Jeff Capel is running out of major talent to recruit for the Class of 2019, as is often the case, perception isn’t reality.
Case in point: Christian Brown.
While the Pitt staff was recruiting five-star center Kofi Cockburn from Oak Hill Academy, who eventually committed to Illinois, they were also heavily recruiting Brown, who is Cockburn’s teammate.
Brown (6-foot-6, 200 pounds) is a four-star small forward and is rated as one of the top 75 seniors in the country by Rivals.com. While schools like Auburn, Clemson, Illinois, Georgia are mentioned as his current favorites, Pitt is quietly making a big impact with Brown and that continued yesterday. Assistant coach Milan Brown was in attendance for Brown’s game on Sunday, and he and head coach Jeff Capel have been to a lot of them over the last month.
After the game, Pittsburgh Sports Now was able to catch up with Christian Brown to talk about his recruitment and to get this current thoughts on Pitt.
“The entire Pitt coaching staff have done a really good job with my recruitment,” said Brown. “Even tonight, Coach Capel came to support me in the middle of a storm, that’s tough. I like how Coach Capel has come in and changed the Pitt program. They are playing like they can win on any given night. That’s tough to do in the ACC. You gotta respect that.”
Pitt has been able to do that because of the playing from their dynamic freshman trio of Trey McGowens, Xavier Johnson and Au’Diese Toney. Brown is a native of Columbia, South Carolina and is friends and is a former teammate of McGowens.
“To see how much of an impact my guy Trey McGowens is having as a freshman says a lot about the confidence Coach Capel has and how he’s allowing him to learn and play through everything,” Brown said. “We represented South Carolina together during the AAU circuit last summer.”
Brown has already made official visits to Clemson, Georgia and LSU. What about Pitt?
Brown tells PSN that he’s looking forward to visiting Pitt soon for an official visit and is hoping to do it in February. While he says his recruitment is still open, the schools he’s hearing from the most now are Pitt, NC State, Illinois and Clemson.
