A new name has appeared on Pitt’s 2019 recruiting board.

While Erwin Byrd is someone that we’re just learning about, he’s been on the Pitt coaches radar for quite some time now. He’s in the news today because he officially received an offer from the Pitt program.

Byrd (6-foot, 175 pounds) is a three-star cornerback from McEachern High School in Powder Springs, Georgia.

“Coach Collins, I didn’t know this at the time but he’s actually been watching and evaluating me for two years now,” Byrd told Pittsburgh Sports Now. “He’s watched as I made the switch from wide receiver to cornerback. This week, he came to my basketball game and then he came to my house after I did a little workout for him.”

The fact that Collins has been evaluating him for that long came as a surprise to Byrd as did something else Collins did.

“When were talking about my house, Coach Collins showed me video from his phone of me during games this year and also during my spring practice that he came to. I had no idea they’ve been interested in me for that long. I had no idea that he was going to show me videos of myself from a year ago.”

“Coach Collins said that he was very impressed by the way I move as a defensive back especially my hips,” said Byrd. “He also liked the way I got in and out of my breaks and the way I’m able to track the ball. I used to play receiver, so when I moved to defensive back, tracking the ball was one of the easiest things for me. Now that I’m covering receivers instead of playing that position, it’s almost like you see what happens or what they’re going to do before it happens.”

The late offer doesn’t appear to be hurting Pitt’s chance of possibly landing Byrd. This weekend, he’s making an official visit to Maryland and then next weekend, he tells me he’ll be in Pittsburgh for an official visit. Right now, his recruitment will come down to either Maryland, Colorado or Pitt.

“I’m very interested in them,” said Byrd. “They’ve been the only college that I’ve been talking to that came to my house. Coach Collins came to my house, hung out with me and talked to me for a really long time. Right now, I’m at Maryland and I’ll see what I like from here and just go from there.”
