Panorama of Pittsburgh during the blue hour from Mt. Washington -- DAVE DICELLO / Used under license

It was a tough week for journalists in the news, as layoffs hit BuzzFeed and Verizon Media (HuffPost, AOL, Yahoo) this week, while Gannett Newspapers (USA Today and many other daily and weekly papers) also announced layoffs as that company prepares to be bought out by a hedge fund.

Of course, those come as just another wave in what has seemingly been a continuous onslaught of buyouts, layoffs, and other reductions in force in newsrooms across the country. It’s been tough to watch as friends and colleagues around the country have lost jobs.

At the same time, it’s made all of us pretty thankful for what we have built here at Pittsburgh Sports Now.

We don’t have shareholders. No one is worried about a corporate takeover. There’s no filthy rich owner using us as a plaything to prop up his own interests. We’re just a close-knit group of people telling the stories of your favorite sports teams and players as best we can.

It seems to be working. Our traffic has been terrific, with January making three consecutive months of over 600,000 page views. We’ve expanded our coverage to include more WPIAL football, Duquesne football and women’s basketball and Pitt baseball, wrestling and women’s basketball.

We’ve continued to grow our staff, adding an outstanding mix of youth and experience with reporters Steve Brenner, Parker Hurley, Chris Mueller, Mitchell Northam and Zachary Weiss and analyst Doug Biega.

Our family of websites has also grown and now includes Pittsburgh Hockey Now, Pittsburgh Sports Live, Pittsburgh Soccer Now, and Steelers Now.

We’ll take some credit for our success, but the reality is that it’s all based on you, the readers, coming to find PSN as a trusted and reliable source for news on your favorite college and high school teams.

So, thank you. We’re very fortunate in this current journalism landscape to be able to continue to grow and build our product in a sustainable way.

We’re also especially thankful for the hundreds of PSN Die-Hards that bought into the vision for our site and the companies that have advertised with us throughout the years. Here’s a list of our current sponsors, who we appreciate very much, and we know they all appreciate your business.

• Archie’s
• Beaver County Auto
• Bowser Automotive
• The Law Office of Mark A. Smith
• Moon Golf Club
• Piper’s Pub
• Pitt City Football Club
• Pittsburgh Wrestling Club
• Summit Academy
• Weed Man USA

If you aren’t yet a Die-Hard, you can sign up here.

If you’d like to advertise or sponsor content at PSN, send us a message.

Supporting local journalism has never been more important, and once again, we thank you all for supporting us.

— Mike, Joe, Alan and the whole PSN crew

Proud to be a die-hard subscriber y’all do a great job and as far as those other media outlets unfortunately that’s the price of political hackery. It sucks for anyone to lose their job but I think people are desperate to get away from all the non-sense politics stuff and I’m confident PSN will continue to thrive as long as y’all avoid going the ESPN route. Cheers to you and the crew Alan look forward to continued success for PSN.
