When Bob Palko walked off the field following West Allegheny’s 28-18 loss to Penn Hills in the 5A Championship, it was assumed that was his last game as a high school coach.
It appears that Palko might not be done after all.
Sources tell Pittsburgh Sports Now that Palko is a candidate for a pretty big WPIAL coaching vacancy.
We’re told that Palko has in fact interviewed for the head coaching opening at Mt. Lebanon. That job opened up when Mike Melnyk resigned back in December. In seven seasons, Melnyk went 44-31 and made the playoffs six times.
If Palko, 59, gets the job, I’m told that he’s already spoken to a couple former staff members at West Allegheny about joining him.
Palko is one of the best coaches in WPIAL history, compiling a record of 217-73 and a record eight WPIAL championships while at West Allegheny.
