When the day started yesterday, Joseph Johnson was still waiting for his first Power Five offer. However, by the time it ended, he had two—including one from Pitt.

Johnson is a 6’3”, 180 pound defensive back from Richmond, Virginia and got the news from Chris Beatty.

“Pitt came out to my school about a month ago and talked to me and told me that they were interested,” said Johnson. “I was on the phone with my friend and Coach Beatty DM’d me. He eventually told me that I can add Pitt to his list of offers and invited me up for a spring practice.”

Along with Pitt, Johnson also received news that Virginia Tech had also offered him a scholarship. It was obviously a big day for Johnson and his family.

”It just means that all this hard work is paying off. I was just so excited and just thought to myself that finally the big offers came. It’s just incredible. My family was so excited and everyone was calling me to congratulate me.”

”This is just a real big relief for me and I think they’ll be more coming. It’s also nice to know that all the hard work didn’t go to waste.”

Aside from the Pitt and Virginia Tech offers, Johnson is hearing from Penn State, Temple, Duke and Virginia.

The thing that jumps out at you about Johnson is his size for a defensive back. He says that’s the thing he’s heard most from schools.

”They like that I have length as a defensive back,” said Johnson. “I also feel that a combination of my speed and physical play are strengths and I try to use both of them.”

The biggest thing that stands out to Johnson about Pitt is the sharing of facilities with the Pittsburgh Steelers, who he says are his favorite team.

Johnson will be finding out a lot more about Pitt because he tells Pittsburgh Sports Now that he has an upcoming visit scheduled for March 8.
