While his recruitment is a long way from over, Pitt is at least in the running for an elite sophomore defensive back.

Virginia Beach, Virginia cornerback Tony Grimes is rated as the top sophomore corner in the country and Monday, he included Pitt in his top 15 teams.

Along with Pitt, Grimes also listed Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Maryland, Michigan, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Penn State, Tennessee, Texas A&M, TCU, North Carolina, Virginia and Virginia Tech.

Pittsburgh Sports Now reached out to Grimes and asked why Pitt made his initial cut?

”Well, I put Pitt in my top schools because of [receivers coach Chris] Beatty,” Grimes said. “My family, coaches and I are really on the same page together ever since he offered me. When he was at Maryland, he offered me and then when he went to Pitt he offered again, which means he had interest me regardless where he’s at.”

Grimes is one of a handful of elite recruits that Beatty has offered since getting hired at Pitt.
