CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Pitt’s football team has had plenty of success over the years while playing then No. 2 team in the country.
The basketball team is going to need some of that mojo, as the Panthers are facing a formidable foe in No. 2 Virginia.
The all-time series between the schools is heavily tilted toward the Cavaliers, which hold a 14-4 advantage.
Three of Pitt’s four wins came before the Panthers joined the ACC, in 1951, 1974 and 1975. The Cavaliers are 7-1 against the Panthers since Pitt joined the ACC, with the lone Pitt victory coming at Petersen Events Center in 2017.
The Panthers are 0-2 all-time at John Paul Jones Arena.
STARTERS
The Panthers will return to a starting lineup they haven’t used much of recently, but leaned on heavily earlier in the year, with freshmen Xavier Johnson, Trey McGowens and Au’Diese Toney joined by senior wing Jared Wilson-Frame and sophomore forward Terrell Brown.
The Cavaliers will start Kihei Clark, Kyle Guy, Ty Jerome, De’Andre Hunter and Jack Salt.
ON THE DIAL
Can’t find the Pitt game on TV? It’s on COZI-TV, WTAE’s sub-channel.
WARMUPS
Everyone is presented and accounted for in Pitt’s warmups, though walk-on Onyebuchi Ezeakudo is sporting a facemask. Must’ve been a rough week of practice.
UNDER CONSTRUCTION
Sometimes, some of Pitt’s players like to go out before warmups to get some extra shots in, but they were limited to half-court access as some last-minute scoreboard repairs were happening. That upper-left panel never got fixed. So much for this being the nicest arena in the ACC.
