Robert Morris Advances to Semifinals With Comeback Over St. Francis, NY

For most of the night, it looked like this would be the final game of the season for the Robert Morris Colonials.

They trailed by 15 points at halftime and then with just 4 minutes left in the game, St. Francis, NY led 54-45. However, the Colonials found another gear, needed an overtime session but were able to pullout a 69-65 in the quarterfinal round of the NEC Tournament.

“We had incredible efforts from a number of guys,” said Toole. “It was really an incredible comeback. Tribute to our defense in the second half, holding them to 19 points. We just didn’t give up. Our guys rallied each other and continued to stay positive, and that’s why I think things turned in our favor.”

Senior Matty McConnell, who tied for a game-high 21 points, made two huge shots which got the game to overtime. First, he hit a deep three with 58 seconds left to get Robert Morris within 1 and then he tied the game 56-56 with a runner in the line with 15 seconds in regulation.

The Terriers had a chance to win the game at the buzzer in regulation but senior Malik Petteway blocked a layup attempt from Glenn Sanabria.

Another senior came up big for Andy Toole as guard Josh Williams tied McConnell with 21 points but 19 of those came in the second half and overtime.

With the comeback win, Robert Morris will travel to #2 seed Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday for a Noon tip-off. The teams split their two matchups during the regular season. This is the 11th time in the last 12 seasons, that Robert Morris has advanced to the NEC semifinal round.

Robert Morris is now 17-15 which means they’ve secured their first winning season since 2014-15 and the sixth in nine seasons under Toole.
