2019 3-Star Guard Julian Champagnie Commits to St. John’s

Jeff and Jason Capel will remain the only brothers on the 2019-20 Pitt basketball team.

Wednesday night, three-star guard Julian Champagnie decided to stay home over the option of playing with his brother, Justin, and made a commitment to Mike Anderson and St. John’s.

“I picked St. John’s because it’s my home town and I think it’s time we put New York back on the map,” Champagnie told Adam Zagoria.

This decision closes what has been a wild recruiting process for the talented guard. Originally, Julian and Justin were getting recruited by Pitt, but after Justin committed to Pitt, Julian decided to move to the Class of 2020. Back then, he told Pittsburgh Sports Now that he planned on attending a prep school and was going to start playing point guard.

Things changed this week when on Monday, he announced that he was moving back to the Class of 2019 and would make a decision Wednesday. Despite listing Pitt, Washington State, Seton Hall and Cincinnati as finalists, most experts expected him to stay home and sign with St. John’s which is exactly what he did.

Capel and Pitt still have three open scholarships for 2019.

Too bad some of these local WPIAL football stars don’t feel the same way about Pitt football. Especially with the history of the program, the 9 National Championships and the laundry list of college and NFL Hall of Famers. Dwarfing both Piddle State and WVCC
