All 105 is a Pittsburgh Sports Now series profiling each of the 105 members of Pitt’s 2019 training camp roster.
9 • Michael Smith, redshirt sophomore wide receiver
Last year: The tall, quick wide receiver did not find a role in the regular rotation at Pitt in his first active season. Smith played in just five games.
Stats: He did not record any offensive statistics, but did make one tackle on special teams.
Accolades, Highlights:
Was a first-team All-Florida Class-8A at Vero Beach High School before coming to Pitt.
Camp outlook: With a new offensive coordinator installing a new system and a new wide receivers coach in Chris Beatty, it’s a fresh start for each and every one of Pitt’s wide receivers that didn’t get the ball enough last season (and that’s probably all of them). Smith will start down the depth chart a ways, but he’ll have a chance.
Projected role: Smith has a similar skillset and body type to Taysir Mack, who will almost definitely start at X or Z receiver, depending on who else starts around him. With four seniors in the receivers’ room, a starting role seems unlikely, but Smith has the talent to carve out a role and position himself well for a breakout in 2020.
