When talking about Pitt’s Class of 2019, linebacker Leslie Smith might be one of the least mentioned players but that could be changing.
Smith, who was the first player to commit last year, is a player that it opening the eyes of Pitt coaches and has now been mentioned a couple of times by Pat Narduzzi in the last few days. The fact that Narduzzi is publicly praising him is impressive because that’s something he’s been hesitant to do in the past.
Prior to Thursday’s morning practice, Narduzzi was asked about the linebackers and voluntarily mentioned Smith.
“I’ll tell you the other guy that I’m impressed with is Leslie Smith,” said Narduzzi. “This guy, like we talked about last night, he has not hit the wall yet. Most freshman do, he has not hit the wall mentally yet, he’s still engaged, he’s still having fun, he’s not going ‘oh my gosh’. That guy might be one of the most impressive freshman so far, just the way he’s hung in there and really gotten a lot of reps.”
Narduzzi says that Smith can play both the Star and Money linebackers positions but right now he’s playing Star.
As far as other linebackers news, junior Chase Pine and grad transfer Kylan Johnson are still battling evenly at Star as are Phil Campbell and Cam Bright at Money. As of today, nothing has been determined yet.
“I didn’t expect there to be a decision today, tomorrow or yesterday,” said Narduzzi.
