North Carolina’s Bell Tower Blue Copies a Pitt Football Tradition

It’s a decade plus long Pitt football tradition.

The phrase “Turn on the Victory Lights”, and the act, in which the university illuminates the sky by turning on the lights at the top of the historic Cathedral of Learning after a Panthers victory.

It’s something that has become popular among Pitt fans, players, coaches and Pitt alumni.

It looks now as though a fellow ACC school is a fan of using lights after a victory and will put their own spin on Pitt’s long-standing tradition.

The University of North Carolina has announced plans to light the Bell Tower blue after each Tar Heel victory.

A pitiful imitation!
The bell tower is only 172 feet tall.
The Cathedral of Learning 535 feet.

Don’t know why you’re assuming they’re copying Pitt when NC State right down the road from UNC-Chapel Hill has been lighting their belltower red for academic and sports victories/celebrations a long time as well.

Follow-up: NC State has been doing this for over 20 years. See this article from an actually reputable news source:
