Ohio Junior Star Malik Verdon Recaps Recent Visit To Pitt

The Pitt football program has historically done well recruiting in Ohio, recently landing players such as Darrin Hall, Bryce Hargrove, Carson Van Lynn and Tyler Bentley.

In this year’s class, they’ve received commitments from 3-star OT Branson Taylor (Elyria, Ohio) and 3-star linebacker Bangally Kamara (Akron, Ohio). Over the weekend, the Panthers hosted a junior from Ohio that appears to be a major Power Five recruit.

2021 athlete Malik Verdon (6’4″, 200) from Hamilton High School in Hamilton, Ohio was in town this past weekend for an unofficial visit. Verdon, who plays both offense and defense, currently holds Power Five offers from Florida and Mississippi State.

PSN spoke with Verdon and found out what brought him to visit Pitt for the Miami game.

“Pitt has been recruiting me since my sophomore season when I was a Moeller High School. Coach Bates has been the coach recruiting me,” Verdon told PSN. “I actually have a friend that currently plays at Pitt (Tyler Bentley), who tells me that Pitt is recruit and what a great environment it is. My coach was actually coming to Pittsburgh for a trip and I was scheduled to visit Purdue, but I asked him instead of I could come with him. My coach asked Coach Bates about it and he said yeah, get him up here.”

Despite being in nearby Ohio, this was Verdon’s first time ever in Pittsburgh and he came away with a good impression of the city and the Pitt football program in general.

“I came away from the visit very impressed with the whole environment of Pitt, how cool the city of Pittsburgh was, how good the food was and how big the football stadium was,” said Verdon. “The other really cool thing was coming into the city through that little tunnel. My coach pointed it out and when we went through it, I was like ‘Wow’. It was really beautiful, that was crazy.”

“At the game, all the coaches were cool, they all came up to me and said ‘what’s up, what’s up’. Everyone just seemed really happy to see me and that made me feel really good. They really seemed to care about me.”

Verdon tells me that Pitt isn’t looking at him for a specific position yet and are recruiting him as an athlete. At Hamilton High School, Verdon is currently playing wide receiver, safety, punt returner and kick returner. As far as the biggest thing he was looking for on Saturday, Verdon says he wanted to see how the bond was between the players and coaches.

Along with Pitt, Verdon says he hearing from schools like Missouri, Arizona State, Purdue, Ohio State, Oklahoma State, Penn State, Ohio, Toledo and Maryland.
