Pitt football’s recruiting efforts in the state of Virginia continues.

Over the weekend, Pitt received a commitment from 2021 4-star running back Rodney Hammond from Virginia and this morning, they extended an offer to a freshman.

Pittsburgh Sports Now caught up with Barnwell this morning and to find out more about him and his thoughts on getting the news from Beatty and Pitt.

“My coach texted me and told me that he (Chris Beatty) had offered me,” said Barnwell. “I was really happy and filled with excitement. I went to a game there and I love the energy Pitt brings when they play and I loved the atmosphere. Pitt has so many electrifying players, it’s just a great atmosphere to be in and around as a player.”

This is a big deal because Barnwell is currently only the third freshman to have an offer from Pitt, joining wide receiver Rahmir Stewart from Philadelphia and cornerback Cedrick Hawkins from Cocoa, Florida.

“I’ve worked for this ever since I touched a football. I’ve always pushed myself to the limit and remained humble through everything. I feel truly blessed to have these offers and it just encourages me to work even harder. I will remain humble and continue to work on my game.”

For being only a freshman, Barnwell has a huge frame and displays pass-catching skills that will no doubt allow him to continue to receive major interest and offers from Power Five programs.

“I believe that the strongest part of my game is my knowledge of the game,” Barnwell told PSN. “I know the game so well, I can read defenses. Pre-snap, I already know who I need to block or how I need to run my route in order to be open. I will continue to strengthen my knowledge, speed, strength and foot work.”
