Last night, the 2A and 5A WPIAL Football Championship matchups were set as the semi-finals wrapped up with eight teams facing-off for the rights to go to the finals next Saturday.

In the first 2A semifinals game, No.1 Washington took on No. 5 Brentwood at Chartiers Valley HS Stadium. The perennial power Prexies were able to hold off a dogged Brentwood team for a 20-14 victory. In the other matchup, No. 2-ranked Avonworth took care of cinderella Riverside, the 14th seed who had upset Burgettstown and McGuffey, at West Allegheny High School.

Undefeated Washington and Avonworth, the two top seeds in the classification, will face off next week at Norwin High School at 12:00 PM. Avonworth will be looking for its first ever outright WPIAL championship while Washington will be looking for its second in three years.

In the first of the 5A semis, 5th-seed Peters Township shocked No. 1 Penn Trafford 28-10 at West Mifflin High School. Peters forced five turnovers on the night and dominated the second half en route to their first ever 5A finals appearance. In the night’s second game, Gateway outlasted McKeesport, 14-7, at Offutt field in Greensburg.

Gateway (11-2) and Peters Township (12-1) will now play for the 5A Championship next Saturday at Norwin High School starting at 6 P.M. The Gators are making their second trip to the Finals in the last three years. This will be Peters Township’s first ever Championship appearance.
