Pitt’s landed one of the top kickers/punters in the country and he’s from Western Pennsylvania.

Belle Vernon senior Cameron Guess announced last night that after receiving an opportunity to join Pitt that he was committing to play for his hometown team.

Due to limited scholarships for their Class of 2020 and also the fact that it’s unusual to have two scholarship kickers on the roster at the same time, Guess will be joining Pitt as a preferred walk-on. However, after Alex Kessman graduates following the 2020 season, it’s likely that Guess will be put on scholarship.

Here’s Guess announcing on Twitter last night that he was joining Pitt.

The intriguing thing about Guess is that he’s both an accomplished kicker and punter. In fact, he was ranked as one of the top 10 punters in the country by the prestigious Kohl’s Kicking Camps national punter rankings. Here’s an evaluation of Guess by the Kohl Kicking Camp:

“He continues to show that he is one of the top 2020 combo prospects. He has a bright future ahead of him at the next level. Guess has one of the strongest punt and KO legs in the country and has improved technically since last January. Guess has been a top 10 Kohl’s player for the last couple of years. This year is no different. Guess is very good on FG’s but is outstanding on Punts and KO’s. His hips are very powerful and often produce huge kicks and punts. Guess has all the talent to be successful at a D1 college.”

Kessman has another year of eligibility with Pitt and then Pitt will have two local kickers on the roster with Guess and former Beaver kicker Will Connelly, who’s currently a redshirt freshman.

This is great news! Not at all impressed with Christodoulou. To offer the Aussie a scholarship was one of this staffs recruiting misses–he has not proven to be a power 5 caliber punter. Not every kid can turn into a star. Let Kessman punt the rest of this season, and Guess punt next year. Maybe Christodoulou will accept the challenge and improve, he has shown some flashes of talent.
Nice to see a home town kid admit he is a Panther fan and represent his city. Also, it is nice to know the post Kessman kicking era has been addressed.

Haven’t seen a punt for touchback with Kirk this year. How many punters can say that? Against Miami, you can blame the poor punt on Adamotis. I was happy Kirk flagged down that snap. He hurried the punt which was understandable, hence a 25-yard punt. The sole punt block was a look out block by the wide out.

I want to see every player on Pitt succeed, but the stats show Pitt has the worst net punt yards in the ACC, and it’s not really close. Special teams are important. Kirk needs to step up or coach needs to make a change.
