Seeing the way things were developing, Pitt Offensive coordinator Mark Whipple was proactive in preparing for Georgia quarterback Tate Rodemaker’s commit to Florida State, which happened Friday evening.

While Rodemaker was visiting FSU, Whipple traveled to New York to meet with an intriguing senior quarterback.

PSN has confirmed that on Thursday, Whipple met with 2020 three-star quarterback Dan Villari (6-foot-4, 220 pounds) from Plainedge High School in Massapequa, New York.

Villari is a tremendous athlete and a classic dual-threat quarterback. This season, he rushed for 1,495 yards and 25 rushing touchdowns while passing for 1,315 yards and 13 touchdowns. Villari was rewarded for this season by recently being named the 78th recipient of the Thorp Award by the Nassau County High School Football Coaches Association.

Despite those statistics and his obvious athleticism, Villari hasn’t been highly recruited until recently. Currently, he holds offers from UMass, Kent State, Buffalo, Albany and Fordham.

But Villari’s recruitment is picking up as he’s hearing from Michigan, Wisconsin and Rutgers. In fact, Villari is on an official visit this weekend at Michigan. It’s likely that Whipple wanted to have personal contact with Villari before heading to Ann Arbor.

PSN caught up with Villari briefly to ask him how he left things with Whipple.

”He’s going to call me Sunday after my visit,” Villari told PSN. “He’s figuring out some stuff with another quarterback that they’re recruiting.”

Our contact with Villari was before Rodemaker committed to Florida State so that’s the quarterback he’s likely referring to.

If Whipple can’t land this one with going against that offer list then maybe we have the wrong OC.

Might want to see what happens in Ann Arbor before you launch an OC search….for the 8th time in 10 years.
