BUS DEBACLE

Perhaps the moment which got the most headlines in the last decade was one which again involved the men’s basketball team as it attempted to return to Pittsburgh following an Atlantic 10 victory at George Mason.

A blizzard made road conditions treacherous and when various Duquesne decision makers saw enough of a break in the weather to make a return trip to Pittsburgh, that was exactly what happened.

Unfortunately for the team it was stuck between the Bedford and Somerset exits on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, which is approximately 80 miles away from campus. Two trucks jackknifed causing it to be stranded for 30.5 hours, 22 of which the bus did not move.

Duquesne easily could have been frustrated by the situation and sleeping on a bus is far from ideal, but the team made the most of the situation whether it was making snow angels, going on a food and water run, using Twitter to both update fans and show some hi jinks and even greeting younger children while posing for a group photo which seemed to put them at ease.

When Duquesne did return to campus all of the local television stations and a reporter were there as Ferry patiently through tired eyes took everyone through the stretch and the gratitude of returning home.

Though far from ideal, it was clear the time brought the team bond together and placed Duquesne in a positive light nationwide.
