Poll: Would Phil Jurkovec Be A Good Fit at Pitt Now?

Published

on

The big local football news yesterday was that former Pine-Richland star quarterback Phil Jurkovec is now a free agent after deciding to transfer from Notre Dame.

Barring a waiver from the NCAA, the former 4-star talent would need sit out the 2020 season but would have two years of athletic eligibility remaining. Ever since the news broke that Jurkovec was leaving South Bend, social media and the message boards have been filled with the notion of him coming to Pitt.

Back in 2018 when Jurkovec signed with Notre Dame and bypassed Pitt and other programs it was because he grew up a fan of Notre Dame and they were his dream school. The situation has now changed and Jurkovec will be looking for a place that will allow him a chance to play and fully display his talent.

The question is could that be Pitt and would the two be a good fit?

A couple weeks ago, that answer would 100% be yes but is that still the case with the recent addition of 4-star Arizona State transfer Joey Yellen. Like Jurkovec, Yellen will be sitting out the upcoming season but he has three seasons of remaining eligibility.

Considering this and the fact that Pitt has another 4-star quarterback on the roster in freshman Davis Beville, would this still be a good fit for the two sides?

This is how this plays out—He’ll be interested in Pitt, but Narduzzi arrogantly won’t reciprocate because he’s spurned by Phil due to his original decision to go to ND. Kid will transfer elsewhere. Narduzzi will say he’s happy with some no name 3 star transfer from ASU. And Pill will win 7 6 and 7 games the next three seasons….

I’m not a big Narduzzi fan, but Coach did not throw any interceptions, miss a block, drop a pass or fumble all season.

Just like the Aliquippa kid, if he didn’t want to be a homer then wish him luck ELSEWHERE. Love the kids who showed you love.

Why is this even a question? Absolutely make room for him if he wants to come home. Nick Patti must know he isn’t going to be the starter so why not offer to find him a new home. It’s a no brained even for a meathead like Pat.

Every Pitt fan is tired, but people are anointing this kid as Pitt’s savior because he is from PGH. Personally I never saw him play, I heard and read of his exploits, impressive I must say but that was HS. Give me a 4 star O-lineman I think we are good at QB.

I like Pat but you’ve gotta admit the guy is stubborn.

You’d think/believe that the Yellen committment would close this door, but maybe it shouldn’t. I’m sure no matter what happens (most likely, he won’t come to Pitt), unfortunately Narduzzi will look bad amongst the Pittsburgh media. He chose to go to ND a few years back, and while I think he’d only help Pitt, I don’t think the two will get back together.

People are all worked up about somebody who is not even in the program. Who is to say this kid starts if he came. Max Browne was a 5 star coming out of H.S. just because a kid did well in the WPIAL or HS. does not mean he is going to be a star at Pitt. My thought is not to bring him in, not because of his talent but because we need O-line help much more. There has been a lot of criticism of the running backs but it all starts up front, these guys need to get it… Read more »

My opinion is they brought yellen in to be the heir apparent to pickett,i understand there will be competition between him and beville so i really just dont see them bringing jurkevic in

He most likely will want to go somewhere bigger than Pitt and that’s certainly his right but if he’s interested in Pitt at all they should certainly make room for him. You accumulate as much talent as possible at every position and let the best man win.

We’re not a program that can say we’ve got our guy moving forward or we’ll have our guy soon. We need to try and add wherever we can, especially at the QB position.

First of all, I don’t see him coming to Pitt. I see him going to a “bigger” school with a national stage to showcase his skills. Second, I’m not sure Pitt would even offer him. Not that I don’t think Pitt would want him, but I think to offer him puts Pitt in a difficult position with recruits going forward. The reason is, I’m sure Pitt told Yellen how great he was, and how he could showcase his talents here and all that BS that coaches tell recruits (some true, some not). If they do that, and then a couple… Read more »

He’s at a big school with a national stage now and can’t win the starting job. Word from the ND insiders has it he’s weighing his options between transferring to a BCS school and sitting out a year if he knows he has a good shot at winning the job or transferring to an FCS school and playing right away.

From a Pitt standpoint, its a fit. Add as much talent as possible.

If Im the kid, Im looking elsewhere.

Not sure why he would transfer, and sit out a year, since he would probably start after next year at ND??? Must be more to the story than we know. He has A lot of talent and Pitt would be wise to try to get him if he’s interested.

They set him back when he arrived at ND by changing his mechanics and they’ve since reversed course with that to get him back to his old ways. The staff is also very high on incoming freshman Pyne.

Narduzzi isn’t any more arrogant than anyone else who was told they were not good enough. Pitt and Jurk are not a good fit. Best thing is for both to continue down different paths. We have 4 star transfer already. Take care of the people who love you, not those spurned by others.

Take as much top talent as you can at the most important position on the field. Let their talent sort it out in practice and play the best option. Rather take 1 extra top QB vs. an extra WR.

I have been screaming for competition at QB so I would be a hypocrite not to up the competition so go for him; may the best QB win. Nard brought back Petrician after being spurned. Raines may have baggage that we dont know of or not. Not bringing someone in you had offered in high school comes to a answering the question can he help us. AS arrogant as I find Nard I dont think him stupid in this regard (only on field calls – LOL).

I haven’t seen Yellen or Jurkovec and not enough of Patti but QB is so important that you take as many as you can justify within the constraints of roster limits. You tell a WR or DB etc. that has been recruited over to look elsewhere in favor of a high-talent QB. For every Bostic/Brown there is a Burrow/Russell Wilson. Given our history, I think you take a shot.
