One glaring need for Jeff Capel’s basketball team is offensive production from the post but that could be arriving next season.
Cleveland 4-star center and Pitt 2020 commitment John Hugley is being mentioned as a strong candidate for Ohio’s Mr. Basketball for 2019-20 and last night he looked every bit the part as the best high school player in Ohio.
Hugley (6’9″, 240) scored a school-record 52 points in Brush High School’s 90-58 win to clinch their 4th straight WRC section title.
Hugley connected on three 3-pointers, grabbed 15 rebounds and scored 21 of the 52 points in the 4th quarter.
How well is Hugley playing? This is what his head coach Chet Mason told Nate Barnes of the News-Herald.
“I’ve worked with USA Basketball, Nike, and the Elite 100,” said Mason. “There’s not many high school basketball players playing better than John right now. I can say that because I work with the who’s-who of high school basketball. There’s not 20 players that are playing better than him. There’s just not.”
Prior to last night’s dominating performance, Hugley was averaging 21.8 points, 12.2 rebounds and 4.3 assists for the season.
