Pitt stared the 2020 season with a statement on the scoreboard.

The Panthers blasted reigning Missouri Valley Conference champions Indiana State, 11-1 in their season opener on Friday afternoon.

Sophomore left fielder Kyle Hess, junior catcher Riley Wash and junior designated hitter Ron Washington Jr. paced the Pitt offense with three RBIs apiece.

Washington went 3 for 5 with a two-run home run that started the scoring in the second inning and an RBI double in the fifth.

Hess also went 3 for 5 with a home run. His blast to right in the fourth scored Washington.

Making his first appearance with the Panthers after transferring from St. John’s River State College, Wash followed Hess’s home run with one of his own two batters later, scoring fellow junior college transfer and Pitt rookie Bryce Hullet to give the Panthers a four-run fourth inning.

After Washington’s RBI double in the fifth, Hullet singled him and Hess home and then Wash drove in Samuel Frontino for another four-run frame. Wash finished 2 for 4.

Hess singled home Jordan Anderson in the eighth for Pitt’s final run. Frontino and Anderson also played in their first game for Pitt as junior college transfers.

That was more than enough offense for sophomore Billy Corcoran (1-0), who pitched five scoreless innings. He struck out eight and walked two while allowing three hits.

Brady Devereux, Chris Gomez, Jarrett Bach and Grant Powell closed down the victory for the Panthers. Gomez worked two scoreless innings. Devereux allowed the lone Indiana State run.

The Panthers will continue their opening-day doubleheader with a 4:30 p.m. first pitch against St. Joseph’s. Chris Cappas will start that game.
