Following their impressive upset win over No. 7 Virginia Tech on Saturday, a member of the Pitt wrestling team is being recognized.
Redshirt sophomore Nino Bonaccorsi was honored on Tuesday as the ACC Wrestler of the Week for his crucial win.
Pitt wrestling coverage on Pittsburgh Sports Now is sponsored by the Pittsburgh Wrestling Club.
Bonaccorsi, who ranks No. 9 in the NCAA Coaches’ rankings at 184 pounds, pulled an impressive comeback win over No. 2 ranked Hunter Bolen. The Bethel Park native trailed 6-2 entering the final period but recorded an escape and two takedowns, including one in the final seconds, to force an overtime session where he won to record his 20th win of the season and 41st of his young Pitt career.
It’s the first time this season that a Pitt wrestler has won this award, and it’s the second time in Bonaccorsi’s career that he earned this distinction.
Pitt finished the regular season with an overall record of 10-4 and 3-2 in the ACC. Keith Gavin’s squad are now in preparations for the ACC Wrestling Championships, which will take place March 8 at Peterson Events Center.
