NCAA Extends Dead Period through May 31

NCAA Extends Dead Period through May 31

The NCAA has extended its current recruiting dead period, which was scheduled to last until April 15, through the end of May, the governing body of collegiate athletics announced on Wednesday, in continued response to the public health concern of the novel coronavirus-caused COVID-19 pandemic.

The Division I council coordination committee made the decision on Wednesday to continue the dead period, which bans all in-person contact between coaches and recruits, including home and school visits from coaches and official and unofficial visits to campus by athletes. The dead period will now run through May 31 for Division I and Division II schools,

The largest impact will be to unsigned Class of 2020 basketball recruits. Their signing period is scheduled to begin on April 15 and close on May 20, meaning that recruits that have not yet been able to take a visit to campus will not be able to do so before the signing period closes.

The signing period itself could also be modified in the future, and athletes can still sign with schools in between the end of the signing period and the beginning of the 2020-21 school year.

The open signing period for Class of 2020 football players, which opened on Feb. 5 and was scheduled to run through April 1, has been suspended through at least April 15. The vast majority of the eligible football players have already signed.
