Recruiting Update on Virginia 3-Star Safety and Pitt Target Shawn Asbury II

Virginia safety Shawn Asbury has watched his recruiting profile rise over the last month. He’s now rated a 3-star safety and continues to add D-I offers. The native of Stafford, Virginia is happy with the way is recruitment has progressed.

“I’ve always felt that this was going to eventually happen so I was just trying to remain patient and keeping working,” Asbury told Pittsburgh Sports Now. “I just didn’t know that all of this was going to happen so fast over the last couple of months.”

We caught up today with Asbury in order to find out where things stand with him and Pitt but also find out what he’s hearing from the different programs that have started recruiting over the last month or so.

“Teams like that I can play multiple positions and that I’m dynamic in the return game on special teams. Those are two things that I’m hearing a lot. Teams talk about the way I can tackle in space and the aggressiveness that I shown coming down to the line to make plays in the run game.”

“Most programs are looking at me as safety but they also believe that I can play corner, can play a nickel spot and if I bulk up some, I can also play strong safety. This off-season, I’ve really been concentrating bulking up in order to get bigger and faster so that I can get on the field in order to play a bunch of different positions.”

Asbury is someone that Pat Narduzzi’s program has offered and have recruited very consistently over the last few months, which he is very aware of and appreciates.

“It’s been very nice to see that and really shows how much they want me and also care about me,” said Asbury. “We’ve been able to build a strong relationship over the past couple of months. We actually talk almost every day, we talk about things like football, academics, video games, really anything. The communication between us is really strong. I just can’t wait to finally get up there and visit to see what they have.”

Asbury sure appears to be someone that’s leaning towards Pitt but he tells me that the Panthers coaches aren’t pressuring him to make a decision anytime soon, although he tells me that he wasn’t really close to making a decision.

“I’ve thought about making a commitment,” said Asbury. “Actually, I was thinking about making an announcement this Sunday but I think I’m going to push that back a week or two and see what happens.”

”Pitt wants me to have a FaceTime call with Coach Narduzzi because I really haven’t had a chance to communicate with him a lot. I’ve mostly been talking with the defensive coordinator [Randy Bates], my position coach and Coach Beatty. I’ve talked to him a little bit but they really want me to sit down and have a good conversation with Coach Narduzzi and that’s what I plan on doing, probably sometime this week.”
