Deivi Jones is part of a group of players from the Class of 2021 that Jeff Capel has on his radar and that’s been in contact with the Pitt staff.
This early communication with the Panthers staff since receiving an offer from them on May 13 has paid early dividends as Pitt is included as Jones reduces his offer list.
The three-star forward from Teays Valley Christian School in West Virginia has announced his top seven schools that includes Pitt, Maryland, Oregon, Clemson, Illinois, Louisville and Houston.
Pitt is looking to add more pure scorers to their roster, especially ones that can shoot beyond the three-point arc and Brown fits that description because of his ability to put the ball in the hoop.
In a previous interview with PSN, Jones’ high school coach Travis Tarr gave this description of his star player:
“Deivi is an elite scorer with a college frame already (6-foot-5, 205 pounds). Every college coach that’s offered him says that he’s an immediate impact player from day one and someone that they know can score the ball. Deivi came to us three years ago from the Dominican Republic and has matured physically and mentally since then. He’s a mature leader on the floor, in the locker room and is someone that his teammates want to be around and play with. He’s just a super competitor.”
Although he doesn’t have a clear leader at this point, Pitt is a program that has caught his eye and Capel is a person that’s made a great first impression.
“Deivi knew where he stood with him after getting off the Zoom call. Not to speak for Deivi but after getting off the call, I got the sense that he was very comfortable with the staff,” said Tarr. “One of the assistant, Coach Brown is from the DMV and had some familiarity about him, contacts with Boo Williams, has many contacts with a lot of people that we’re familiar with. Deivi appreciated the straight talk from Coach Capel as he told Deivi exactly what he needs to do. He was pretty open about things that he needs to improve his game and I think that he agreed. I know that Deivi enjoyed talking to him and the opportunity that they’re presenting to him.”
With his top seven schools announced, Jones hasn’t given an indication whether he’ll reduce this list further or if an early decision could come sometime this summer.
