While Xavier Castillo might be a relatively new name to the general public, he’s someone that the Pitt football coaching staff is quite familiar with.

The Panthers staff started to talk with Castillo last year while recruiting future Pitt commitment OT Michael Statham at St. Frances Academy in Baltimore, Maryland.

Pitt’s recruitment of Castillo has paid off because the big 6’5″, 325 pound 3-star offensive lineman announced his top six and it included Pitt. The other five teams in the running for him are Virginia Tech, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Michigan State and Maryland.

“I’ve been in contact and talking to Pitt for a while, going back to last season,” Castillo told Pittsburgh Sports Now. “The coach from Pitt that I’ve mainly been in contact with is Coach Powell, their running backs coach but I’ve really been in touch with most of their staff too.”

“They’re in my top six because I feel that I have a great relationship with their coaching staff and also one of my former teammates is going there. I’ve just heard great things about Pitt and hear that the city of Pittsburgh and the Pitt campus is just beautiful.”

Castillo tells PSN that he was supposed to make a visit to Pitt in March but that got wiped out because of COVID-19 but has learned about the football program and the university from the staff as they also sell him on being a big part of their future offensive line.

“They’re telling me that I’ll be lined up at offensive tackle across from my boy Mike Statham and I’ll be an important member of anchoring the offensive line. I’m really close with Mike, that’s my guy. He’s told me a few things about the program and really wants me to go there.”

Pitt is looking to add one more offensive lineman to their Class of 2021 and Castillo fits the description of the type of player they’re looking for.

“I’m just a powerful, nasty guy that will blow anyone up. I can play all five positions on the line, including center,” said Castillo.

Ideally, Castillo would like to make official visits before choosing his college but with that not being possible anytime soon, look for him to be making a decision in the near future.

“I would like to make visits before I make a decision but I’m not sure that’s possible. I’m going to try and do that but we’ll see.”

When asked specifically about Pitt and where they sit with him, Castillo was short and to the point.

“Pitt is high up there.”
