Pitt and Hampton alum Ryan Luther made the game-winning layup as Herd That came back from an 18-point deficit to upset The Money Team, 102-99 and advance to the quarterfinals of The Basketball Tournament in Columbus, Ohio on Thursday.
Luther’s layup capped a 14-2 game-closing run for No. 23 Herd That, which crossed the 101-point Elam Ending threshold on his basket for the highest-scoring game in the first two rounds of the tournament. Luther finished with nine points and six rebounds in 18 minutes. He finished 3 of 7 from the field.
“We’re lucky to have him and made a great read, phenomenal finish to end the game,” point guard Jon Elmore said.
The No. 7-seeded The Money Team led, 40-24 after the first quarter and 62-55 at the half before making the late run to win.
Chris Cokley (UAB) scored 32 points and Jacorey Williams (Arkansas/Middle Tennessee State) had 30 points for Herd That, a team populated with mostly Marshall alumni.
No. 23 Herd That will face No. 2 seed and four-time champions Overseas Elite in the quarterfinals on Saturday at 2 p.m. The game will be televised on ESPN.
Where were those game winners when he was at Pitt?
If they were winning 100-99, how is a two point play a winning bucket? Are the rules that you have to win by 3?
It’s called the Elam Ending. After the last media timeout (after 4 min left), the clock turns off. The target score is set at eight points more than whichever team has the most at that point. As soon as someone hits the target score, the game is over. The target score was 101. So if Luther missed and TMT went the other way and scored, they would have won.
Laba spēle, Ryan!
Es redzu, ka tavi mati ir izauguši
Wouldn’t it be Ryans in Latvian? 😊
