Due to their limited current scholarship availability for this year, there probably won’t be a ton of recruiting news for Jeff Capel’s team for the Class of 2021.
That isn’t the case for future recruiting classes and we saw an example of that on Wednesday as the Panthers extended offers to six players in the Classes of 2022 and 2023.
Class of 2022 forwards Matt and Kyle Filipowski (Wilbraham & Monson Academy in Massachusetts) both received offers on Wednesday from assistant coach Tim O’Toole. Kyle (6-foot-10, 215) is a rated by 247 Sports as Top 100 prospect with a long list of offers from schools such as UCLA, Providence, UCLA, Vanderbilt, UConn, Boston College, Georgetown, Iowa, Louisville, Marquette, Maryland, Notre Dame, Purdue, Virginia Tech and Xavier. For his brother Matt (6-foot-11, 235), this was his first major offers with previous offers coming from Bryant, Marist and Stony Brook.
Later on in the day, the Pitt staff turned their attention to a group of talented sophomores in the Class of 2023.
Thursday evening, four highly ranked prospects in the Class of 2023 received word that they’d earned offers from Pitt and Pittsburgh Sports Now got their reactions.
Jahnathan Lamothe: (6-foot-4, 180 pounds) combo guard from St. Frances Academy in Baltimore, Maryland. Lamothe holds Mississippi State, Georgetown, DePaul, Bryant and Austin Peay.
“Just wanna say I’m very honored and thankful for the Pitt coaches believing in my talents and potential. I like the Pittsburgh environment and also there guard play. I’m a fan of Xavier Johnson a lot a kid out of Maryland. I hope they keep their interest in me along the way.”

Shawn Simmons: (6-foot-6) shooting guard from Friends’ Central School in Philadelphia. Simmons holds offers from Saint Joseph’s, Temple, Georgetown and LaSalle.
“The talk with coach Capel was a great call. I felt like we connected good. We had a conversation about basketball and most importantly off the court subjects. That me that he’s interested in me more then just a player. That’s important to me while being recruited.”
Amani Hansberry: (6-foot-8, 230 pounds) power forward from St. John’s High School in Washington DC. Hansberry holds offers from Mississippi State, Tennessee, Howard, LSU, Texas A&M, DePaul, Virginia Tech and Rhode Island.
“I’m very excited about this offer even though I don’t know much about this school but I need to do some research. I’ve heard a lot of good things so to have received an offer from Pitt its truly a blessing. As far as Coach Capel, I’ve heard about where he’s been at and how many good programs he’s coached at, which makes me feel even more excited to know that a coach who’s been at a blue blood and has seen what it takes to make a great team is recruiting me and believes in me enough to offer me.“
Kwame Evans: (6-foot-8, 190 pounds) Forward from Baltimore Polytechnic Institute in Baltimore, Maryland. Evans holds offers from Kansas, Mississippi State, Howard, LSU, Maryland, TCU, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Xavier, St. John’s, Georgetown, Virginia Tech, DePaul, Auburn and George Washington.
”I was excited to be offered by Pitt and what I do know of Coach Capel is that he coached at Duke for seven years and also at Oklahoma.”
