Joey Yellen to Make First Pitt Start at QB

Published

on

Joey Yellen will make his first start at quarterback as a member of the Pitt Panthers, Pittsburgh Sports Now has learned, in place of injured starter Kenny Pickett.

Yellen, a redshirt freshman transfer from Arizona State, has started one game in his career, which came last season with the Sun Devils against USC.

In that game, Yellen threw for 292 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions against the Trojans. He was granted immediately eligible by the NCAA after transferring to Pitt.

Yellen completed 2 of 3 passes in mop-up duty against Austin Peay and handed off twice for Pitt after Pickett was injured against Boston College.

Fellow redshirt freshman Davis Beville also played some against Austin Peay, completing 3 of 6 passes for 13 yards, and took one snap when Pickett was banged up against NC State.

Redshirt sophomore Nick Patti served as Pickett’s backup in 2019, playing four games and making one start against Delaware. He finished the season 26 of 43 for 301 yards, three touchdowns and one interception.

Beville, Patti and Yellen are the only three quarterbacks that traveled with the team to Miami.
