For the second time this current recruiting class, a WPIAL star has decided to take his talents down to the SEC.
In an announcement made live on Pittsburgh Sports Now, Gateway 4-star safety Derrick Davis made the decision to commitment to the defending national champions, LSU Tigers over Penn State and Ohio State. This choice comes to a shock to some as Penn State was widely viewed as the team to beat.
“I was really impressed with the LSU coaches and when I took the visit down there, I just felt like that was the place to be and felt like home,” said Davis. “For my parents to also say that they can see me be there, meant a lot to me. My mom could care less about football and was really impressed with the academics down there. It meant a lot to my family the pride that the program has with players graduating meant a lot. It was also impressive with how much money LSU has put into all of their facilities.”
Davis told PSN’s Alan Saunders that he really got serious with LSU at the end of August and was impressed with how long the Tigers coaching staff stuck with him and continued recruiting him despite the fact that they couldn’t come visit him and he wasn’t able to visit Baton Rouge until two weeks ago.
“I really like the way they treat their players and how they really use their freshman and they believe in their freshman players. I look at Derek Stingley and how much trust they put into him and he was just a freshman. Because of that he was able to do big things. They see me playing everywhere, pretty much like Tyrann Mathieu did, it’ll be like bringing the “Honey Badger” from Western Pennsylvania down to Louisiana. They also see me helping out on offense as well.”
Davis is heading to the SEC and will be joined by Peters Township safety Donovan McMillan, who earlier committed to Florida.
