Legendary Jeannette Coach Joe Mucci Dies at 86

Former Jeannette football coach Joe Mucci died at age 86 on Monday.

Mucci coached at Jeannette from 1968-85 and is the winningest coach in Jayhawks history with a 150-33-3 overall record. He led his teams to 11 conference titles and three WPIAL titles in 18 seasons, taking home WPIAL crowns in 1971, 1981 and 1983. He also coached at Greensburg Central Catholic, where he was the school’s first athletic director and football coach.

Mucci was inducted into the Western Pa Chapter of the Sports Hall of Fame in 1993, the Pa Scholastic Football Coaches Hall of Fame in 1997, the WPIAL Hall of Fame in 2016 and the Jeannette City School District Hall of Fame in 2018.

He was a graduate of Derry Township High School and St. Vincent College. According to the Tribune-Review, he died due to complications from COVID-19.
