2022 3-Star TE Michael Hawkins Hoping to Further Relationship With Pitt

Michael Hawkins is a 2022 3-star tight end from Somerset High School in Somerset, Kentucky.

At this point in his recruitment, Hawkins (6-foot-6, 235 pounds) holds offers from Vanderbilt and Army but is also in communications with other Power Five programs including coaches from Pitt. This is a relationship that’s in the early stages but Hawkins is excited about it and hoping to begin regular contact with Tim Salem and Pat Narduzzi.

Pittsburgh Sports Now spoke with Hawkins on Tuesday morning and found out that his family already has a tie to the Pitt staff. Michael’s father, Todd, was a punter at Army from 1990-94 and his special teams coach was current Pitt running back and special teams coach Andre Powell.

“I’ve been hearing regularly from members of Pitt’s recruiting department since September or October,” Hawkins tells Pittsburgh Sports Now. “Obviously, I’d love to get an offer from them and start being in regular communication with Coach Salem. When describing my game, I’d call myself a very traditional tight end. I block well and catch well and my coaches have asked me to be able to do many different things for my team, like block in-space, block at the line, play wideout and more.”

“I’ve just a very traditional player and tight end. I can block and catch equally as well, right in the middle. The way our offense runs, it’s really 50/50. I think last year, our breakdown was 51 percent run and 49 percent pass plays. On pretty much every pass play, I’m out running a route. I’d like to think that I’m able to do both equally as well.”

Hawkins is hoping that his overall recruitment starts to pick up and believes it will but until then, he plans on working hard to get better and won’t stress about anything and will control the things in his power that he’s able to control.

“It’s a very exciting time, just to be able to talk with coaches at big colleges and big names and to programs you’ve heard about all your life, especially programs like Pitt in the ACC,” said Hawkins. “Bunch of emotions as it’s exciting, nervous and also disappointing when you don’t get an offer. Yeah really, it’s all of the above but I regardless of what happens, I’m really loving all of it.”
