A report by FBSchedules.com Monday morning revealed that West Virginia football has scheduled non-conference football games against FCS teams UT Martin and VMI for 2026 and 2027, respectively. The game against the Skyhawks in 2026 completes the Mountaineers’ non-conference schedule for that season.
With nine Big 12 games, WVU plays three non-conference games in a typical year. In 2026, the Mountaineers will play the first game of a home-and-home series against Alabama, host UT Martin and travel to play East Carolina. With a full non-conference schedule, that means WVU and Pitt will not continue their renewed Backyard Brawl series, at least for that season.
Right now, the Mountaineers and Panthers are scheduled to renew the Backyard Brawl in 2022 and play every year through 2025, four seasons in a row. It now appears the series will break again in 2026 without any further meetings currently planned. Right now, the Panthers’ only known non-conference game for 2026 is the beginning of a home-and-home series against the Wisconsin Badgers. As an ACC team, Pitt plays four non-conference games in a typical season.
The Backyard Brawl has not been played on the gridiron since Pitt and WVU were Big East rivals in 2011. The Mountaineers currently have a three-game winning streak over the Panthers. The men’s basketball Backyard Brawl has been renewed and played every season since 2017, although the two teams did not meet this season due to COVID-19 restrictions on non-conference games.
